Root Music Concert at NIROX Sculpture Park

Sunday 17 June 2018 - Father's Day

Cradle of Humankind

Enjoy a relaxed, outdoor family excursion in the Cradle of Humankind this Father's Day for the annual Roots Music Concert at NIROX Sculpture Park.

Settle into a casual day of acoustic songs performed beneath a warm winter sky. Delight in the delicious cuisines on offer and wander through the collection of contemporary art on exhibition throughout the sculpture park.

A collection of South Africa's finest musicians will perform their musical compositions in this ancient place – the Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site – interpreting indigenous sounds and rhythms through modern allegories, including:

  • Bongeziwe Mabandla
  • Sibusile Xaba
  • Indlovukazi
  • Pops Mohamed
  • The Urban Village

The musical programme will draw on historic African sounds from Marabi (township music), Mbaqanga (traditional Zulu), Umgqashiyo, Isicathamiya or Mbube (Zulu a capella), sakkie sakkie (Afrikaner music), Goema (Cape jazz), Kwela (pennywhistle-based street jive), Xhosa Folk and even African meditation.

It is a shared stage of young and emerging artists performing beside their musical elders, resulting in an entirely unique sonic landscape, and the passing on of musical knowledge from one generation to the next.

Music for today – rooted in our rich past.

The Roots Music Concert is set amidst the NIROX 2018 Winter Sculpture Exhibition: NOT A SINGLE STORY which features 24 artworks by predominantly female artists including Esther Mahlangu, Mary Sibande, Yoko Ono, Nandipha Mntambo, Zanele Muholi, Jane Alexander, Bronwyn Katz, Ayana V Jackson, Lugiswa Gqunta, Sethembile Msezane and other contemporary artists.
